WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUTCHER BOX
Butcher Box works with farmers, cooperatives, and USDA approved meat processing facilities to distribute humanely raised, antibiotic free high quality meat. They specialize in delivering 100% grass-fed, grass-finished beef, heritage breed pork, and free-range organic chicken to your front door step each month. If you’re unable to locate quality meat in your area, this may be a good option for you.
HOW DOES BUTCHER BOX WORK?
Choose Your Box | Five Curated Box Types
Butcher Box is a monthly subscription service. To get started you simply chose from their five curated boxes of high quality beef, chicken, or pork. You have the option of customizing your own box or allowing Butcher Box to create your order for you via their four boxed options.
- Custom Box
- Mixed Box (most popular)
- Beef Only Box
- Chicken & Beef Box (what I ordered)
- Pork & Beef Box
The Custom Box comes in two (weight-based) sizes: Classic and Big. It’s the only option that allows you to choose the exact cuts of meat that come in your box. The remaining four boxes allow you to choose your meat type based on a set number of meals. Although you can only select your exact cuts of meat with the custom box, you can customize any box with special add-ons like Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon and Applewood Smoked Uncured Bacon!
Add-Ons
- Wild Caught Alaskan Salmon- 2lb
- Ground Beef Brick- 2x1lb
- Breakfast Sausage (1lb)
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast – 3x1lb
- Whole Pork Tenderloin
- Boneless Pork Chops (4/8oz)
Meals & Price
After you’ve chosen your box, you then select the size of your box. I went with the smaller box, which consists of 24 meals at $5.38 per meal for a total cost of $129. The larger box – which is recommended for large families and those with deep freezers – consists of 48 meals at $4.96 per meal for a total cost of $238. The larger box offers a slight discount, possibly making it the best value! As a family of three we were quite pleased with the smaller box option.

MY BUTCHER BOX REVIEW
Now that I’ve gotten all the technical stuff out of the way, let me share with you my personal Butcher Box Review.
Delivery
Butcher Box delivers fresh, frozen meat directly to your front doorstep. Because I live in Houston, when I received a notification from Amazon that my box had arrived I panicked at the thought of meat sitting in front of my house in 100 degree temperatures. But, I was pleased to see that the packaging kept the meat completely frozen for a couple of hours. It was still frozen solid by the time I made it home to transfer it to the deep freezer.
The Meat
The quality of meat that I serve my family is very important to me. My 14 month old just discovered chicken, and she absolutely loves it. I literally make her fresh, pan-seared chicken thighs every evening. Yes! I’m that mom. So when I read about the sustainable sourcing of Butcher Box meats, I was very interested in trying out their service. As we do not consume pork, I decided that the small beef & chicken box was the best option. Our box came with organic chicken breasts, chicken thighs, drumsticks, grass-fed top-sirloin steaks, and 4 packages of finely ground, grass-fed beef (1 lb each).
I’ve prepared a few meals, but am still making my way through the box. Thus far I have been very pleased with the taste of the meat. The cuts of organic chicken, specifically thighs and breasts, were quite girthy. I was able to get a few extra portions by slicing them in half. The finely ground, grass-fed ground beef was clean and robust in flavor, with a meat-to-fat ratio of 85% meat to 15% fat. Our box also included one of the most versatile cuts of beef, top sirloin. I am not a fan of steak, and honestly don’t even know how to prepare it. My husband is the steak-man and prepared them for us. The Top Sirloin had a rich flavor profile that reminded me of a juicy Sunday roast, but with the texture of a steak. It was absolutely divine.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If you’re thinking about giving Butcher Box a try, I say go for it! At least order one small box to determine for yourself if it’s a good fit. The Butcher Box reviews that I have read online leads me to believe that the all beef box provides consumers the best bang for their buck, mainly because steaks are a bit more expensive than organic chicken and heritage breed pork. Most folks can find those two aforementioned items at their local grocery store for a reasonable price. The all beef box is going to be my choice for box number two because I will definitely be ordering another box.
Additionally, Butcher Box is having a “hot boy/girl summer” with specials out the wazoo! If you purchase by the end of July, all new subscriptions receive 6 FREE BURGERS until October and FREE WINGS FOR LIFE with each purchase. That’s a heck of a deal, and a great incentive to order your box today!
